  19. <p>     The Pentagon claims that the TAILHOOK REPORT can't be released
  20. because there's no Secretary of the Navy in place to receive
  21. it. The full story: the Defense Department has a designated
  22. candidate for the Navy post but is holding back the public announcement
  23. in order to justify not releasing the Tailhook findings. The
  24. unreleased report on drunken aviators molesting women at the
  25. 1991 Tailhook Association convention is devastating: it's expected
  26. to recommend courts-martial for at least 12 senior Navy officers.
  27. Pentagon officials (with White House blessing) want to stall
  28. the findings until after March 23--when the defense budget
  29. goes to Congress.

  31. <p>...And More Good News for the Pentagon
  32. </p>
  33. <p>     Journalist and author RANDY SHILTS (And the Band Played On),
  34. who revealed last week that he has AIDS, has more bombshells
  35. planned for May. On Memorial Day, St. Martin's Press will publish
  36. his new book, Conduct Unbecoming: Gays and Lesbians in the U.S.
  37. Military, in which he claims "a vast gay subculture has emerged
  38. within the military," complete with gay Marines in the White
  39. House honor guard. An advance excerpt: "At least one gay man
  40. has served in the astronaut program...The Navy and the Marine
  41. Corps had at least one gay person at four-star rank since 1981,
  42. and at least one gay man has served on the Joint Chiefs of Staff
  43. in that time."

  45. <p>Death Becomes Her
  46. </p>
  47. <p>     Like brother, like sister. Margo Janus, sister of assisted-suicide
  48. crusader DR. JACK KEVORKIAN, is a regular attendee at his deadly
  49. house calls. "She's been at every one," said Geoffrey Fieger,
  50. Kevorkian's lawyer and spokesperson. But why? According to Oakland
  51. County, Michigan, prosecutors, the 66-year-old Janus, who has
  52. worked as a secretary for Chrysler, has no medical background
  53. and doesn't participate in the suicides in any substantive way.
  54. "She feels the way Jack feels," explains Fieger. "Her firm conviction
  55. [is] that human beings who are suffering have rights over
  56. their bodies." Last Thursday, Kevorkian assisted two more suicides,
  57. bringing his total to 15, and Janus was present. This time Kevorkian
  58. had a fellow physician on hand: Dr. Susan Grenz, a specialist
  59. in internal medicine from Palm Harbor, Florida, and sister of
  60. one of the suicides.

  64. <p>     As the cold war defrosts, Americans and Russians are discovering
  65. common interests: rock music, fast food and...MIND-CONTROL
  66. TECHNOLOGY. Former KGB General George Kotov has told American
  67. visitors about Russian research into "acoustic psycho-correction."
  68. The process involves transmitting commands into the subconscious
  69. through static or white-noise bands. The U.S. Army says it's
  70. "looking into" these reports.

  72. <p>Hails from the Chief
  73. </p>
  74. <p>     Oxford University isn't the best place to learn American military
  75. habits. Word is that PRESIDENT CLINTON'S sloppy salute is drawing
  76. winces from the Pentagon. Aides are subtly suggesting that he
  77. work on it.
